One of the greatest perks of the internet era is that you have many ways in which you can literally sit down and make money at the same time. To hell with that, you can sleep and make money at the same time. The cool part is, you don’t need to have a multi-million-dollar company that does it for you, or have bought millions in stock that might, or might not make you money.

Earning a passive income has become much easier with the generation of bloggers and online marketing. A lot of people make thousands of dollars a month just by doing some of these things. One of them, that you probably have heard of, is affiliate marketing. Now, a lot of people don’t know how affiliate marketing works however, it is so important that they learn about it, especially when it comes to profiting from your blog and similar activities.

Affiliate marketing is huge right now, in fact, 99% of the people who have a passive income began by using this technique. And even though the whole concept of revenue sharing and referred purchases has been around for a while, it has never been as exploited as it is right now.

What is affiliate marketing?

To understand what is affiliate marketing and how does it work, you first need to define what this marketing strategy is per se.

The whole idea behind this is that you promote other’s people’s products, either using what is known as an affiliate network or by a direct deal with the seller. How you earn the money is that if the person you referred buys the product, then you get a commission, a percentage of the profit made by that purchase. The whole scheme is based on revenue sharing, so when someone has a product they want to sell more, you are offering to promote their product and increase their sales through the affiliate program. The advantage of this is that you don’t have to invest in a marketing campaign for your product that might not even work. Instead, you only have to pay for that promotion when it has already worked and gotten you a purchase you wouldn’t have gotten otherwise. It is important for the seller to constantly monitor their sales in order to see if the percentage lost is making up for the increase in purchases, but the truth is, in almost 100% of the cases, it does.

On the other hand, you have the affiliates, the people who promote. They don’t have a product and want to make money. These people often have an audience they can recommend the product to, so they can earn an income from this audience purchasing the product.

In fewer words, affiliate marketing is a process, in which you can earn a commission by promoting someone else’s (being a person’s or company’s) products. The affiliate marketer finds a product they like and that might be of interest to their audience and profit from each sale they make.

It is kind of like being a real estate broker. You show people a house, and if the people you showed it to buy it, you get a percentage of how much the house cost.

How does affiliate marketing work?

It is not hard to understand what affiliate marketing is, and how it works is not much harder.

It works by dividing the responsibilities of the marketing and creation of a product among different parties. What this does is to leverage the abilities many individuals happen to have, making the marketing strategy much more effective, while sharing a small part of the profit with said individuals. In order for this to work, you’ll need three different parties involved; the sellers and product creators, the affiliate or person who is advertising, and the consumer. These three are involved in a rather complex relationship when it comes to this strategy that has to work a certain way to ensure affiliate marketing works.

First, you get the sellers and product creators. These are obviously very important because you can’t promote something that doesn’t exist. A seller can be either a solo entrepreneur or a large enterprise. They will be known as vendor, merchant, retailer, or product creator, it doesn’t matter as long as they have a product they can and want to market. This product can vary from being a physical object, like books or household goods, or a service, like make-up tutorials or fitness programs. The seller doesn’t need to be involved in the marketing process in an active way, however, they can, and often also, advertise and profit from the income sharing that was associated with the affiliate marketing strategy.

Also, there are affiliates or publishers. They are also known as publishers since they publish the advertisements for products, but also because they are often bloggers who publish content. They can be individuals or companies the ones that market the product sold by the creators. The idea is that they do it in a way that is appealing to their audience, so they can persuade potential buyers. The affiliates are often trusted by their audiences, so they have a better chance to encourage them to make a purchase convincing them it is valuable or beneficial for them. If the consumer buys the product the affiliate is recommending, then they get a commission from the revenue of said purchase. The way a company knows that the purchase being made comes from a specific publisher is through what is known as an affiliate link, the purchase has to be made through it in order for the affiliates to get their commission.

The people who advertise the products usually have very specific audiences to promote. Usually, the products an affiliate will choose is closely related to their audience’s interests. That is how it is beneficial for sellers and consumers. Considering specific products belong to a specific market niche, the affiliates are able to attract consumers that will trust their opinion and are therefore more likely to act upon a recommendation they make.

Finally, there are the consumers. Regardless of them having that knowledge or not, their purchases are what promotes and drives the whole strategy of affiliate marketing. Consumers get these products offered to them by the affiliates through social media, blogs, or websites. When the consumer decides to consume, then the purchase they make will be shared by the seller and the affiliate. Sometimes the affiliates tell the consumers that they will be receiving a commission for the purchases they make. However, other times, the consumer is likely to have no idea of what is affiliate marketing and how does it work, much less that they are contributing to it.

However, it is very rare that a consumer will have to pay a higher price for a product that is part of an affiliate marketing campaign than if they purchased it directly from the seller. When the affiliates earn from the purchase the percentage will usually be included in the retail price. The consumer makes the purchase just like they would any, and remain completely unaffected by the campaign system they are a significant part of.

How does the affiliates get paid?

To finish to completely understand you’ll need to understand how the payment process to the affiliates is. The process is more like processes, and it is a little more complicated than just the payment. Payments work differently depending on what deal the affiliate makes with the seller. It isn’t always necessary for the consumer to buy the product for the affiliate to get paid. The contribution a publisher has to the sales of a product might be measured differently according to how the campaign is being managed.

First, there are those who get paid per sale. This is the one that was discussed above and is usually the standard way to make affiliate marketing. In this kind of affiliate marketing, the seller will pay the affiliate a percentage of the revenue a product they referred makes. This is as a payment for the affiliate doing a series of marketing strategies. To get the product sold. So, the affiliate has to get the product sold before they get paid for it.

Another way you can get paid through affiliate marketing is being paid by the lead. This system is a little bit more complex. The affiliate is compensated based on a conversion made on the leads. It is also known as pay per action. The affiliate convinces the consumer to visit the seller’s website and perform a certain action or complete a certain task. This can be answering a survey, filling a contact form, signing up for a 30-day trial, subscribing to the website’s newsletter, or maybe downloading something. While these actions don’t directly give money to the seller, they are part of a bigger strategy to attract potential customers.

Lastly, there is getting paid by the click. This is usually separated from affiliate marketing, but can totally be considered as such. This kind of strategy seeks to redirect customers. The affiliate will look for ways in which their audience drifts from its platform into the seller’s website. The publisher will have to make it in a way that the audience is curious and actually deviates from their platform into the sellers. Usually, whenever someone clicks on the link the affiliate provides, they are paid a small amount of money. However, it is differently calculated according to the increase in web traffic. The amount the affiliate is paid by this is significantly smaller than the other two, yet the frequency in which they receive the money is higher.

How can beginners start at affiliate marketing?

Now that just the beginning of what is affiliate marketing, I highly recommend you try to not do all this on your own there are many things you need to consider when thinking about enrolling in an affiliate marketing program. Mainly, you need to take into consideration the following to become successful.

1. Develop a bond – You want to create an audience before beginning to promote things. This audience needs to characteristics, very specific interests, and confidence in your opinion. You first need to establish yourself as an expert in their topic of interest, and you can then promote products related to this area.

2. Personal branding – there are millions of products you’ll be able to promote so be selective. Pick products you do believe in and make sure they are truly valuable. Your audience is the one making you that money so you have to keep them happy. When doing this, you achieve a higher conversion rate and establish your opinion as reliable.


If you review products and services related to your niche, then you increase your status as an expert on the topic, while telling readers why they would benefit from buying the product you are recommending them. It is very effective if you do this comparing the product you are paid to advertise with other similar ones. Make sure you are detailed too.

Don’t only use an email campaign or a social media post. Use a lot of different platforms and marketing strategies to enhance your audience into the product. And make sure they are more responsive.
